How to Choose a Dillsburg PA Newborn Photographer Your Family Can Grow With

There’s something about the photo shoot that’s featured in this blog that is especially near and dear to my heart as a Dillsburg PA newborn photographer: the fact that I’ve had the honor of working with this family before. I took their newborn photos when they welcomed their first beautiful baby, and to my absolute excitement, they called me again when they were expecting their new little one so I could take their new daughter’s newborn portraits too.

Not only is it a joy to be able to revisit a family I already know and to watch their lovely family grow, but it makes my heart happy to know that they were so comfortable with me the first time around that they trust me with their newborn again. And truthfully, coming back to the same photographer as your family grows will make your life easier too, because you know the photographer and become more and more comfortable with them at every session (and so do your kids!).

But the tricky question is, how do you find a photographer your family can grow with? Here are a few key tips.

Choose a Photographer with Multiple Specialties in Portrait Photography

Your family will want professional photos at certain special times in your life…and you want a photographer who can help with many of those special times. For example, I specialize in not only newborn photography but also milestone photography for babies and kids, family photography, senior photography, and maternity photography. So many of my clients love that when it’s time for a photo shoot for the next chapter of their life, they already know who to call.

Find a Dillsburg PA Newborn Photographer Whose Aesthetic Matches Yours

Beautiful photos are meant to be enjoyed on a daily basis in your home, and every photographer has their own aesthetic style. As you’re shopping for a photographer whose photos you’ll want to display in your home year after year, make sure you choose someone whose style matches the look you have in your home. This way, all of your portraits year after year will have a matching style and they’ll seamlessly fit into your home decor.

Trust Your Gut

Chemistry between a photographer and a family can play a huge role in how well your photo shoot goes! When you have your first session with a photographer (and even before that, when you’re consulting and planning with them), ask yourself how well you and the photographer get on the same page and how comfortable you feel with them. When you find a photographer who “gets you” and who your kids are comfortable around, that’s a keeper!

Finding Your Match in a Dillsburg PA Newborn Photographer

It can be tricky to find a photographer who’s the best fit for your family, personality-wise and artistically, but when you have a good fit, that’s who you want to call every time you want new portraits or when there’s a new milestone on the horizon. Contact Karissa Zimmer Photography and let’s find out if I’m that photographer for you!

Newborn Photography in Mechanicsburg PA: Do You Have to Do a Lifestyle Newborn Photo Shoot at Your Home?

As a photographer who loves to create families’ treasured newborn photography in Mechanicsburg PA, I take most newborn portraits in my cozy studio. New parents typically love that I already have everything we need right here, so they can come in ready to go. But every so often, I have clients who have their hearts set on lifestyle newborn photos - portraits that have a less posed look, and feel more like beautiful snapshots of your life with your baby. The growing family featured in this blog is one of them, and their portraits turned out absolutely wonderful.

Where Do Photo Shoots for Lifestyle Newborn Photography in Mechanicsburg PA Usually Happen?

Usually, a lifestyle newborn photo shoot takes place in your home, mostly in your beautiful nursery where you and your baby will spend so much of your bonding time together. But what if you want the look and feel of a lifestyle photo shoot but your home isn’t well-suited to one, or you don’t want to worry about having your home ready for the photo shoot?

For Newborn Photography in Mechanicsburg PA, Do Lifestyle Photos Have to Be at Your Home?

If you want a lifestyle photo shoot but you don’t want it to take place at your home, there are other options! One possibility is to have the photo shoot at a family member’s home, like your baby’s proud new grandparents’ home, for example. Of course, that family member or friend has to be fully on board and their home has to have spaces that are well-suited to these types of portraits.

Another option is to have newborn photos taken at my studio, but to give the session more of a lifestyle feel. This can include putting more of a focus on you interacting with your little one, rather than having most portraits feature your baby alone, and a focus on simplicity in your portraits with your baby, rather than creating more intricate photo sets like you might see in traditional newborn photos.

What Is a Sibling Add-On Session? Hershey PA Lifestyle In Home Newborn Session

If you already have children at home and you want to include the whole family in your baby’s newborn photos, we can absolutely make that happen! I do these using a type of Hershey PA lifestyle in home newborn session that I call a sibling add-on session, like the session featured in this blog.

Lifestyle newborn photography session in Harrisburg PA

What Is a Sibling Add-On Session?

A sibling add-on session is basically the second of a two-part session that I do for newborn portraits when my client wants to include their newborn’s siblings who are 5 or younger. I take the sweet, sleepy solo newborn portraits during a studio session with just you and your baby, and then we do a second session at your home with your other children.

Why Do I Do a Sibling Add-On Session for a Hershey PA Lifestyle In Home Newborn Session?

I absolutely love newborn photos with siblings, and I know that parents do too, especially when they can look back on these portraits as they watch their kids’ relationships with their siblings blossom. What’s tricky, though, is that during a studio newborn session, we want to cultivate a quiet and cozy environment so your newborn will sleep for as much of the session as possible. And when there are new big brothers and sisters in the studio, they want to be their playful selves, and that might not mesh well with the quiet atmosphere we’re trying to maintain for their baby sibling.

An add-on session lets you have the best of both worlds! By taking sibling portraits separately at home, you can get joyful portraits of the whole family as well as quaint and serene newborn portraits from the studio.

Tips for Including Siblings in Newborn Photos in Harrisburg PA

Newborn portraits will be some of the most special photos you’ll have in your family because they capture such a brief and meaningful part of your life. And among newborn photos in Harrisburg PA, the portraits of babies with their big sisters or brothers are often especially sentimental because they celebrate the first days in a lifelong bond that your children will share. I mean, as much as I love all of this baby boy’s newborn photos, the portraits with his sister (who I photographed as a newborn too - oh how time flies!) just have a little something extra special.

How can you make these types of photo sessions smooth and fruitful? Check out these tips for your sibling newborn photos in Harrisburg PA.

Set Expectations for the Session

Set aside some time to talk to your older kids about the photo session. Tell them what to expect and what the photographer might ask them to do.

But it’s also important to make sure your kids look forward to this photo session, because we want them to have fun! Explain to them that this is a fun way to make memories with their new little sibling and that this is a special experience.

Plan the Logistics with Your Photographer for Sibling Newborn Photos in Harrisburg PA

As beautiful as sibling newborn portraits are, they do take specific planning and coordination. Especially if you have kids who are toddlers or elementary age, they want to run and play and they might not be able to sit still very long for the session, but we need to keep the environment peaceful during the session so your baby can sleep.

Every photographer has a different way they do this, so make sure you discuss this early in the planning process. In my case, I set aside a separate session for sibling portraits where I actually come to your home to photograph your newborn with their siblings. This way, we get our quiet and peaceful newborn session in the studio and your other children get to have some time in the spotlight while being in an environment where they feel comfortable and confident.

Embrace the Candid Moments

The true beauty of sibling photos with a newborn baby, and the reason they’re close to my heart, is because children can be so genuine. As a parent, I know you want your kids to be perfectly behaved and to follow instructions during the photo session, but some of your favorite portraits may be those that highlight authentic, heartfelt moments that your kids have with their new sibling.

Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Photography Tip: Hire the Same Photographer for Each Baby

Welcoming a new baby into your family is a monumental and life-changing time, and that needs to be celebrated and commemorated in a way that will last. What better way to do this than with newborn portraits? Your Mechanicsburg PA newborn photography will create stunning artwork for your home that will forever transport you back to these special memories. Here’s one of my top tips for making the experience even better: hire the same newborn photographer every time. I’ll explain why.

Getting to Know Your Photographer (and Vice Versa)

Photography isn’t a science, it’s an art form. It’s all about capturing the beauty of this moment in time and carrying your family’s spirit and personality into the portraits. As a newborn photographer, I can tell you first-hand that the better I know my clients, the better I can make their portraits special and personal. The client whose beautiful baby girl is featured in this blog, for example, is a returning client. Not only does it make the experience more enjoyable when you already know and are comfortable with your photographer but it lets me bring more of your personality into the shoot.

Consistent Aesthetic Style

As I said, photography is an art form and not a science, and this means that every photographer’s style will be slightly different. If you have a different newborn photographer for each child, you might not realize how different they look until you go to put the portraits next to each other on your wall and they clash. On the other hand, if you work with the same photographer each time, you’ll be able to hang your babies’ portraits together with a consistent and complementary look so you get the full benefit of this custom artwork.

An Easy and Convenient Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Photography

It’s no secret that when you’re pregnant and preparing for a newborn while you already have a child at home, you’re exhausted and don’t have a lot of time or energy to spare. Simply put, going to the same newborn photographer for each child makes the planning and logistics easier for you. You don’t have to comb through portfolios to see whose work you like, you don’t have to vet a photographer or worry about whether they have the skills and newborn safety knowledge to do a good job…all you have to do is reach out to book and you’ll have the process started. It’s a great way to make life easier on yourself.

Booking Your Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Photography

I’d be thrilled to get to know your growing family and create stunning portraits that will become heirlooms for your family. Let’s talk! Contact Karissa Zimmer Photography to learn more.

Why Are Harrisburg Newborn Portraits Taken Indoors Only?

The trend for a lot of professional photography today is to take photos outdoors - that’s the case for family photography, for example, as well as senior photography and maternity photography. But you might notice that it isn’t the case for newborns, and as a newborn photographer, I can attest to this. But there are reasons for it! Here’s why Harrisburg newborn portraits are typically only taken indoors.

Controlling the Environment

During a newborn photography session, we want your little one to sleep as much as possible. In the studio, we can set up the environment so it’s irresistible for a nice nap - soft lighting, quiet sounds, cozy warmth, you name it. Outside, we don’t have control over all those elements. If a loud vehicle drives past or an unexpected rain starts, that could be all it takes to wake your baby and make it hard to get the sleepy portraits parents love (plus it leaves you with a not-so-baby baby when you go home).

Quaint Lighting

Outdoor lighting can be harsh and overly bright. Not only might that make it harder for your little one to sleep but it’s also just not necessarily the look you want for newborn photos. We want newborn portraits to reflect the gentle sweetness of your precious baby, and in the studio, I can create the nice soft lighting that helps to create this look.

Safety for Harrisburg Newborn Portraits

This one is so important! Your baby is precious and we want to keep them safe during their photo session. There are so many risks outdoors that we don’t have indoors - overheating or sunburns, bug bites, and so on. My photo studio is specifically set up for safe and beautiful newborn photo sessions, with things like cushions made to keep them from rolling or falling.

Why Not to DIY Your York PA Newborn Photos

Your baby’s first portraits will always be a treasured heirloom for your family. But the idea of investing the time and resources into a professional photo shoot sounds overwhelming for some parents, so naturally, some families try to take their own newborn photos. While these can still be photos you love, it can also be heartbreaking if you try a DIY approach and it doesn’t go the way you hope. In fact, there are several reasons why I advise against DIY York PA newborn photos.

Your Baby’s Safety

Safety is my top priority in every newborn session, and I know that it’s your first priority for your baby too. There are tricks and techniques to newborn photography to create the looks and poses you want while making sure that baby's head is supported and baby is safe at all times, and unless you have had specialized training in newborn photography safety, you have no way to know these practices. Many of the newborn photos you see on Pinterest aren’t just posed and photographed the way they look, so it’s important not to try to recreate them on your own

Missing Your Window

For many different projects, you can try a DIY option and then, if it doesn’t work out the way you had hoped, you can call a professional to take over. With newborn photography, though, that isn’t really an option. Ideally, you want your baby’s newborn photos to be taken in their first 10 days after birth…but it can take a few months to get on a photographer’s schedule. So if you try to take your own newborn portraits but they don’t turn out as great as you had hoped, you will have missed the time window for your ideal newborn portraits.

Getting Quality Portraits

Simply put, your baby’s newborn photos are special, once-in-a-lifetime portraits, and you deserve for them to be amazing! Even though phone cameras and consumer cameras have come a long way, they just aren’t a match for the quality newborn photos you’ll get from a professional photographer who has in-depth experience and knowledge, not to mention a professional-quality camera.

Planning Your York PA Newborn Photos

Getting professional newborn photos can be an easy, low-stress process - after all, it’s designed for families who have just given birth and are adjusting to life with a newborn. I’ll make the experience a relaxed and enjoyable one so you have nothing to worry about. Contact Karissa Zimmer Photography and let’s chat!

Expecting a Baby? Here’s How to Start Preparing for Your Newborn Photos in Mechanicsburg, PA

When you’re pregnant, you’re doing so much planning and preparation - readying the nursery, stocking up on clothes, diapers, and other essentials, and so much more. But now is also the perfect time to start preparing for your baby’s newborn photos. After all, you want to capture those beautiful newborn portraits in your baby’s first ten days of life, so if you can have all the details taken care of in advance, it makes your life so much easier after you give birth. From your friendly newborn photographer, here’s your pregnancy checklist for your newborn photos in Mechanicsburg, PA.

What to Do During Pregnancy to Prepare for Your Newborn Photos in Mechanicsburg, PA

What should you have on your to-do list during your pregnancy to prepare for your newborn photos? Don’t worry, it’s very simple! All you need are these key steps:

  • Choose and book your photographer. Ideally, book your photographer by the time you start your third trimester so we can start planning ahead for your session. If you book with me, this is actually the only thing you have to do - I’ll walk you through the rest!
  • Make a plan for displaying your newborn portraits. You don’t need to know the specifics, but it’s great to have an idea of where in your home you want your portraits to be so I can design your session to suit the room’s decor. I’ll meet with you for an in-home consultation to help you with this too.
  • Pick out your outfit. While you don’t have to be in your baby’s newborn photos, a few portraits with your growing family can be such meaningful treasures! Neutrals and classics are typically best, but I’ll help you pick out your outfit during your consultation.
  • Consider any special requests. This isn’t a must but think about and let me know of anything specific you want in your session, like sentimental items or family heirlooms you want to incorporate, whether you’ll be including your baby’s older siblings if they have them, and so on.

Preparing for Your Newborn Photography with a Full-Service Photographer

As a parent-to-be, there isn’t too much to do in planning your newborn photos especially if you hire a full-service photographer like Karissa Zimmer Photography, but following these simple steps now makes such a difference when your baby is born. To learn more, contact my photography studio.

My Central Pennsylvania Newborn Photography: Why I Do In-Person Consultations

If you’ve shopped around for photographers in the past, you might know that every photographer has a different process or experience for their photo sessions. Some provide more hands-on support, service, and guidance while others use simplified processes that don’t involve as much time or one-on-one attention. In my central Pennsylvania newborn photography studio, I’m all about attentive service!

I know how important your newborn portraits are to you - the first professional photos your little one will ever have and the only ones you’ll have when they’re this tiny. These portraits are worthy of an investment, not only from you but from me too. I’m dedicated to creating custom portraits that are unique to your family, and one of the ways I do that is by starting with an in-person consultation. Here are a few insights into why I provide in-person consultations and the difference they make for my clients.

Providing a Full-Service Experience for Central Pennsylvania Newborn Photography

As a mom, I know first-hand that life is busy when you’re preparing for a new baby…and that’s an understatement! You have so much on your plate already, and my philosophy is that you should be able to get stunning newborn photos without adding more chores to your list. In-person consultations allow you and I to sit down for some dedicated planning time so I can use your preferences and vision to plan your photo session, help you decide what to wear, and more.

Getting to Know Your Tastes

Custom photography, including central Pennsylvania newborn photography, is all about capturing your special memories in a way that’s authentic to you and your family. Your family’s personalities should shine through in your portraits. Spending time with you in person lets me get to know you and your family so I can create portraits that are true to who you are.

Designing Your Session for the Final Result

I believe portraits should be displayed and loved in your home, not sitting on a storage drive or in the cloud. An in-person consultation gives us a chance to talk about how and where you might want to display your portraits. This way, I can design your session using color schemes, compositions, and other details that will coordinate perfectly with your home decor.
