Why Parents of 2+ Love Studio Newborn Photography in Camp Hill PA

Camp Hill PA best newborn photographer, Karissa Zimmer

When you’re planning a newborn photo shoot, one of the first decisions you’ll make is whether you want a lifestyle session, which takes place at your home, or whether you prefer studio newborn photography in Camp Hill PA. It’s all a matter of personal preferences and either one will allow me to create gorgeous portraits that your growing family will treasure. But I’ve found that a studio session can be especially popular and helpful for parents who already have a child or two at home, for a few important reasons.

Parents pose on a black backdrop for the first photos with their newborn daughter near camp hill PA

You Don’t Have to Have Your Home Photo-Ready

It’s important to note that your home doesn’t have to be spotless (or anywhere close to it!) for a lifestyle newborn shoot. We typically only photograph in your baby’s nursery or your primary bedroom, and perhaps one other area of the home, so you only need a few rooms to be camera-ready.

Still, even that can be difficult when you have not only a newborn but also a toddler or young child at home, especially during this time of transition when your older child might be wanting more love than usual. A lot of parents who are balancing the newborn stage with older kids find that it’s easier not to have company and to have their newborn shoot at my studio instead.

Your Older Kids Can Stay at Home During Studio Newborn Photography in Camp Hill PA

During a newborn photo shoot, we want your baby to just peacefully sleep away the session as much as possible. Sometimes, having their big brother or big sister around can disrupt that sleep by accident, and when the whole family is at home for a lifestyle photo shoot, that might make it difficult to keep your baby asleep.

During a studio session, your older kids can stay home where they’re comfortable and have fun with their grandparents or a sitter while you bring your newborn to the studio for their portraits. This way, the photo shoot goes smoothly, you and your partner get to share this special bonding experience with your new baby, and your older kids don’t have to worry about being quiet or behaving a certain way for the potentially hours-long photo shoot.

A lot of parents do want photos of their newborn with their new siblings, and we can absolutely arrange that too in a way that gives you the best of both worlds!

My Cumberland Valley High School Senior

For my beautiful daughter, Madalyn...

Mechanicsburg PA Sunflower senior photography

Somehow, we’re here. And I can’t even believe it.

It feels like just yesterday she was walking across a kindergarten stage, and now I’m standing behind the camera capturing her high school senior portraits… trying to hold onto a moment that feels like it’s slipping through my fingers.

Madalyn and I truly grew up together. It’s always been the two of us—figuring life out side by side. She has been my life’s greatest gift, my teammate, my steady place in seasons that felt anything but steady. There have been so many moments where it felt like it was us against the world… and in more ways than I can count, she’s been the one who kept me grounded.

She is the most gracious and loving person, even when I’m at my messiest. She’s always been an old soul, wise far beyond her years, with a quiet strength that has carried both of us through so much.

Wildflower field senior pictures

Madalyn is kind. She is loving. She is forgiving. She is intelligent, artistic, and deeply creative. She loves animals and people in a way that feels so genuine and natural. She’s a leader, and she is a truly loyal friend. She was made in God’s perfect image, and I will never stop being grateful that He chose me to be her mother.

She is passionate about life and driven in everything she does. When she commits to something, she gives it her whole heart. During high school, she found one of her greatest passions through FFA, pouring herself into it, growing as a leader, serving on the officer team and eventually earning her Keystone Degree.  Watching her dedication and commitment to something bigger than herself has been nothing short of admirable.

That passion has also led her to floriculture…another space where her creativity and love for beauty have come to life.

She’s also an incredibly talented artist, and ceramics became another place where she found joy and expression. So many days were spent after school in the ceramics classroom or at clay club, creating pieces that reflect not just her talent, but her patience and heart. Being a member of the National Art Honor Society is just one more reflection of who she is and of the story her high school senior portraits are telling.

A Cumberland Valley high school senior uses her pottery wheel in a beautiful flower field at her senior photo session.

I already know I’ll miss hearing about these parts of her everyday life. These spaces, FFA and ceramics, have helped shape the young woman she is today.

Madalyn has been my driving force in everything I do. As a solo mom, I always knew I had to work hard to build a life for us, to give her opportunities, to be strong even when I didn’t feel it. But the truth is… she made that easier just by being who she is.

Even as a little girl, she was attentive, loving, kind, and considerate. She made me want to be a better human. She still does.

high school girl flower photos

I am so incredibly proud of the person she is and the woman she is becoming. She has been a dream child in ways I don’t take for granted. In fact, she didn’t take after me in all the ways I’m thankful for...because God knew exactly what He was doing! He didn’t give me a version of myself to raise… He gave me Madalyn.

Senior girl beach poses

Her loving nature, her passion for life, and her gift for connecting with people will take her farther than she can even imagine.

Her high school senior portraits experience wasn’t just one session. It was a collection of little moments over time. Each one was intentional. Each one was about capturing who she is right now… not just how she looks, but her spirit, her passions, and this fleeting season of life.

And now here we are.

This season is one of the most emotional I’ve ever walked through as a mother. There is so much pride. Even more than I can put into words. But there is also a quiet grief that comes with closing this chapter. We get so used to what we know, and then suddenly everything begins to change.

It’s bittersweet in every sense of the word.

Madalyn,
I want you to know that I love you more than anything I have ever loved. You have been my life’s greatest purpose and my greatest accomplishment. Being your mom has been the greatest joy of my life, and I cannot imagine a more beautiful gift from God.

My hope for you is that you always remain exactly who you are. Beautiful, authentic, loving, and kind. That you take that love and pour it into everything you do. That you chase your passions boldly and never settle for anything that doesn’t bring you genuine happiness.

And more than anything, I pray that you stay deeply rooted in your faith in Jesus and that He is the foundation you build your entire life upon.

No matter where life takes you… I will always be there to cheer you on!

Love,

Your Mom <3

Stress-Free Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Lifestyle and Sibling Photos: My Top Tips

a family of 4 and 2 dogs embrace on their sofa at their lifestyle in home photoshoot

The first portraits of your new baby with their older siblings will probably be some of your lifelong favorite photos, and no parent should miss out on them. But I also get that the idea of trying to manage a photo shoot for kids and a newborn at the same time sounds exhausting enough to make you hesitate about doing it at all. Good news! There are plenty of ways to get the Mechanicsburg PA newborn lifestyle and sibling photos you love without all the stress, and here are my top tips.

A new family of 4 welcomes their newest addition to the family with a lifestyle newborn photography session in Mechanicsburg PA

Have a Separate Session for Sibling Portraits

I’ve found this to be such an improvement that it’s now the way that I do all of my newborn portraits with siblings! We start with a photo shoot that’s just for the newborn and parents, so that we can really focus on keeping the environment quiet and calm so that your newborn stays soothed and sleepy.

Then, we have a separate add-on session at your home with the whole family. This way, you get plenty of the solo newborn portraits that you’ll always cherish as well as beautiful photos of your baby with their built-in best friends, their siblings, without having to compromise on either.

A toddler girl embraces her new role as a big sister while loving on her newborn baby sister during her in-home newborn photo session with Karissa Zimmer Photography.

Bring In Some Extra Help for Your Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Lifestyle and Sibling Photos

Your sibling add-on photo shoot will be a fun memory for the family, but these sessions can also be a lot to manage, between the photos and your new baby as well as keeping your older kids on track.

Especially if you have more than one child besides your newborn, and/or if your other children are in the toddler stage or tend to be very active, it may be helpful to have a grandparent, a friend, or a sitter come over to help. It’s not a must-have, but it won’t hurt to have an extra set of hands if you need them!

Embrace Authenticity

One of the most beautiful parts of Mechanicsburg PA newborn lifestyle and sibling photos taken in your home is that they’re authentic to your home life. You get to preserve these beautiful snapshots of your first days with your sweet child, with your beloved family home in the background. Life isn’t perfect, and your portraits don’t have to be either!

Maybe there’s a spit-up and you have to change your baby or the bedding, maybe your older kids are getting rambunctious…don’t worry, it happens! Put stress aside and remind yourself that these portraits are genuine and beautiful, and that one day, all of that chaos will be a precious memory.

Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Photos: Can You Bring Your Own Props?

Newborn baby girl is wrapped in blue floral and photographed in Mechanicsburg PA newborn photography studio

You don’t need a special occasion or a milestone to give your family the gift of beautiful new portraits, but there are times in life that you always want to capture in artwork. One of them is welcoming a beautiful new baby into your family. If you’re looking ahead to newborn photos, you might already be thinking about your session and how you want your portraits to look. What’s involved in the planning process? Notably, should you be thinking about props for your Mechanicsburg PA newborn photos?

A new father poses with his newborn baby daughter on his arm during their newborn photo session near 17055

What Props Are Used for Newborn Photos?

Every newborn photo shoot is an entirely customized experience, so the props vary a lot from one baby to the next. Overall, my style tends toward more simplistic and classic looks, so the props that I use will be minimalist. For example, I might have your baby curled up on a cozy blanket, snuggled into a basket, or swaddled among flowers and decor. But I keep the portraits uncluttered so that your baby is always the focal point.

Along with these props, I also use a variety of simple yet adorable accessories to craft a special look for your little one. For example, I use swaddles in a wide range of different colors, as well as headbands, hats, and more.

Should I Bring the Props for My Mechanicsburg PA Newborn Photos?

No, you don’t have to worry about props or accessories at all! At my studio in the Mechanicsburg area, I have an abundant selection of pieces that I can pair together to create the perfect aesthetic for your baby and your family. This is one of many benefits of hiring a professional newborn photographer - I already have everything we need, so you can simply arrive with your baby and enjoy the experience.

With that said, some families do like to bring a few sentimental items to incorporate into their baby’s session, like an heirloom baptismal outfit, a handmade baby item, or a parent’s firefighter uniform or military attire, and that’s completely fine! Just mention this during our planning consultation so that I can prepare accordingly.

Cumberland Valley High School Senior poses on the school softball field for her senior photos with Karissa Zimmer Photography

Senior portraits are something that so many teenagers look forward to. It’s an opportunity to not only get beautiful professional photos but also to have your custom photo shoot that creates a lifelong snapshot of who you were at this exciting time in your life. One way that many seniors do this is by incorporating some of their interests and activities into their Mechanicsburg PA senior photos, so let’s talk about some of the ways you can do this (hint: there are more options than you think).

The Classic: Sports and School Activities in Mechanicsburg PA Senior Photos

High School senior girl swings her softball bat at her senior photoshoot with Karissa Zimmer Photography near 17050

The most common way you see special interests highlighted in senior photos is by focusing on your high school sports and activities. For example, someone who plays football might have some photos in their football uniform or just the jersey with jeans, maybe holding a football or taken at their stadium. In the case of the beautiful Cumberland Valley High School senior whose session is highlighted in this blog, we celebrated her as a softball player with some photos that showcase her sport. If you’re in the band, we can also take photos with your instrument.

Thinking Outside the Box

Not everyone does school sports or activities, but don’t worry - your hobbies and interests are just as important and there are always ways to put them in your senior photo shoot! That’s part of why I have a planning consultation with every client, so we can talk about ways to make your photo shoot uniquely you.

A few examples might include:

  • If you love cars, photos with your car (or a dream car that a family or friend will let you borrow)
  • Portraits with your favorite crafting supplies
  • If you love tabletop gaming, photos of you with your gaming setup
  • Photos with a collection that means a lot to you, like your sneaker collection, book collection, or game collection
  • Portraits in your ROTC uniform

Those are just a few examples, but really, we can find ways to highlight nearly any hobby or interest into your senior photos, even if it takes a little creativity. To talk about your own custom Mechanicsburg PA senior photos, contact Karissa Zimmer and let’s chat!

How to Choose a Dillsburg PA Newborn Photographer Your Family Can Grow With

There’s something about the photo shoot that’s featured in this blog that is especially near and dear to my heart as a Dillsburg PA newborn photographer: the fact that I’ve had the honor of working with this family before. I took their newborn photos when they welcomed their first beautiful baby, and to my absolute excitement, they called me again when they were expecting their new little one so I could take their new daughter’s newborn portraits too.

Not only is it a joy to be able to revisit a family I already know and to watch their lovely family grow, but it makes my heart happy to know that they were so comfortable with me the first time around that they trust me with their newborn again. And truthfully, coming back to the same photographer as your family grows will make your life easier too, because you know the photographer and become more and more comfortable with them at every session (and so do your kids!).

But the tricky question is, how do you find a photographer your family can grow with? Here are a few key tips.

Choose a Photographer with Multiple Specialties in Portrait Photography

Your family will want professional photos at certain special times in your life…and you want a photographer who can help with many of those special times. For example, I specialize in not only newborn photography but also milestone photography for babies and kids, family photography, senior photography, and maternity photography. So many of my clients love that when it’s time for a photo shoot for the next chapter of their life, they already know who to call.

Find a Dillsburg PA Newborn Photographer Whose Aesthetic Matches Yours

Beautiful photos are meant to be enjoyed on a daily basis in your home, and every photographer has their own aesthetic style. As you’re shopping for a photographer whose photos you’ll want to display in your home year after year, make sure you choose someone whose style matches the look you have in your home. This way, all of your portraits year after year will have a matching style and they’ll seamlessly fit into your home decor.

Trust Your Gut

Chemistry between a photographer and a family can play a huge role in how well your photo shoot goes! When you have your first session with a photographer (and even before that, when you’re consulting and planning with them), ask yourself how well you and the photographer get on the same page and how comfortable you feel with them. When you find a photographer who “gets you” and who your kids are comfortable around, that’s a keeper!

Harrisburg PA Family Photos: Why Moms Need Family Photos the Most

As a family photographer in southern central Pennsylvania, and as a mom myself, I know that family portraits are gifts that don’t just keep on giving but that give more and more with every passing year. The more your family changes and your children grow, the more you’ll cherish the memories you made with them and the Harrisburg PA family photos that transport you back to when they were little.

But for moms, family photos give you a little something extra that you don’t often get…photos of you with your kids.

Early Fall outdoor family photos with a family of 4 near Harrisburg PA

Moms Need Photos with Their Kids

We live in a time when we all have a camera with us at nearly all times (in the form of our phone), and it’s wonderful to be able to take snapshots of your day to day life with your little ones. But take a moment to look through the latest photos you have of your kids. How many of them actually show you with your kids? Maybe 1 in 10, at best?

Of course, that’s because you’re always the one taking your kids' photos, especially if you’re a single parent or co-parent. While it comes from a place of the best intentions, with you wanting to take photos of your kids’ daily antics and all the exciting new things they’re doing, you’re an important part of their life that’s missing from those photos. For so many families, professional photo shoots are one of the only times you’ll have photos with your children.

Why You and Your Kids Will Treasure Harrisburg PA Family Photos Together

As much as you enjoy having home photos of your kids, there’s something so much more special that is captured when you’re in the photo with them: the interaction and love between the two of you.

For both you and your child as they grow older, those family photos of you and them together will be so much more than a reminder of what you looked like in these years. They’ll capture the way you look at your child and the way your child looks at you. They’ll capture your laughter as the two of you are having fun together. And they’ll bring you both back to this exciting day you shared and to so many other memories that are tied to it.

Being in photos with your kids will give you these more tangible, powerful reminders of the past, and it will give those reminders to your children too, who will one day treasure these portraits as they grow up too.

If you don’t have enough family photos with your kids, I’m here to help! Reach out to Karissa Zimmer Photography to book your own Harrisburg PA family photos.

What Age Should Your Kids Be for Harrisburg Fall Family Photography?

Fall family portraits are a favorite for so many families because of the beautiful autumn aesthetics. The colorful leaves make the perfect backdrop, so many families take advantage of the season. But are outdoor family photos an option when you have a baby? Is there a minimum age your kids should be for outdoor Harrisburg fall family photography?

A Mother,Father, and their two young daughters pose at a beautiful outdoor location during their outdoor photo session with Best fall family photographer near Harrisburg PA

The Best Ages for Outdoor Family Photos

There’s not a hard-and-fast rule about how old your kids should be before an outdoor family photo shoot, and I’ve worked with families whose kids are all ages, including infants! It’s really just a matter of your child’s development, your comfort level, and your expectations for the photo session. This is one of the many reasons why I have a personal consultation with my clients before their photo shoot - to plan the session and discuss any special considerations that we might have to think about.

Two young sisters laugh together on a little bench at their outdoor family photography session with Karissa Zimmer Photography

Considerations for Harrisburg Fall Family Photography with a Young Child

If you have a baby or toddler, there are several things you’ll want to consider when you’re thinking about whether they’re old enough for an outdoor fall family photo shoot:

  • Make sure your child is able to be outside in the fall weather for long enough to have your photo shoot. We can discuss how you can make sure they’re bundled up enough to be warm while still looking adorable for your portraits.
  • Your child doesn’t have to be able to stand or walk to be in a family photo shoot! But if they can’t, keep in mind that someone in the family will need to be holding them in most of the photos.
  • If your child can’t stand or walk without help, and you want some photos where no one is holding them, this is a perfect opportunity for us to lay down a cozy blanket and take some seat portraits of the family together.
  • During a family photo shoot, I love to have different combinations of family members - some of the whole family, some of the parents alone, some of the kids together, and so on. For a small or especially playful child, you might consider bringing along a grandparent or family friend who can care for them for a few minutes when I’m taking portraits of just you and your partner.

These are just a few of the things that you and I will discuss when we’re planning your Harrisburg fall family photography session if you have a young child. Rest assured that I work with families of all ages, and even if there’s some extra planning involved, I’ll create a beautiful family photo shoot that you can all cherish for years to come. Contact Karissa Zimmer Photography and let’s start planning!

How Many Locations Can You Have in a Hershey High School Senior Photo Shoot?

The portraits featured in this blog are from a wonderful girl’s Hershey High School senior photo shoot, and I was absolutely thrilled with how they turned out. As you scroll through them, you might notice that there are a lot of different background locales, so it looks like we were all over town for her photo shoot. That’s because we actually were! It’s not just a bunch of green screen magic or flat backgrounds.

This brings up a question that clients sometimes ask when they’re booking senior photos: how many locations can you have in a photo shoot? Every photographer has their own policies for this, so I’m happy to explain mine.

A high school girl poses on a rock in the Susquehanna River during her senior photoshoot.

Location Limits for a Hershey High School Senior Photo Session

The short answer is that I don’t have a set limit on locations for senior photos. For the client whose portraits are featured in this blog, for example, we started in Harrisburg at the beautiful Susquehanna River. Then we made our way through the town of Hummelstown with photos at some locations throughout the town, and finished the session with portraits in a beautiful flower field.

This photo shoot with several different locations was perfect for this client, and the variety suited her well, but that’s not the right type of session for every client. As a photographer, my aim is to give every client a customized photo shoot that they love, and this looks different every time.

For that reason, I don’t set a limit to the number of locations we can use for your session. It’s always on an individualized basis within the timeframe we have available. We’ll discuss all of these details during your planning consultation so that you’ll know what to expect on the day of your session.
