Why I Use Multiple Locations as a Cumberland Valley High School Senior Photographer in Mechanicsburg PA

If you’ve browsed some of my senior portraits in my portfolio, you might have noticed that each session has a lot of variety - varied locations and varied looks all packed into the same session. Every photographer does their photo shoots a bit differently, but as a senior photographer in Mechanicsburg, PA, I love to bring my clients to several outdoor locations in the course of their photo shoot.

Take this beautiful Cumberland Valley High School senior’s photo shoot for example. She had a great time seeing all the different looks we could capture at different locations in the Mechanicsburg area. Why exactly do I do this and why have I come to think this gives my clients the best senior portraits? I’m happy to explain!

1. Creating Visual Variety as a Senior Photographer in Mechanicsburg PA

You might be surprised by how often you use your teenager’s senior photos. They’re often used for their high school yearbook, programs for senior extracurricular activities like sports or musical performances, certain events or awards in their first year or two of college, and simply for you and other family members to frame and enjoy in your homes. When I incorporate several outdoor locations into the session, it offers a lot of visual variety, which gives you a lot of different looks to use for various formats and purposes.

2. Capitalizing on the Fluidity of a Senior Photo Shoot

Many types of portraits are meant to highlight a particular chapter of your life or aspect of your family, like a maternity photo shoot or a newborn photo shoot. As much fun as it is to highlight a special moment in your life, a senior photo shoot is unique because it’s a lot less defined - we’re celebrating your child as a whole, not just a particular life event. This means we have more freedom to get creative and be adventurous, so it’s a great opportunity to play with multiple locations. In fact, senior portraits are the only type of photo shoot when I get to shoot at several locations!

3. Honoring Your Teen’s Complexity

Senior photos are all about freezing this moment in time when your teenager is at the junction between childhood and adulthood, and you know well that they’re so much more than a one-tone personality. They have many different interests and aesthetics, so why limit their photo shoot to only a few aspects of who they are? Let’s celebrate every side of who they are! Taking advantage of multiple locations allows us to capture so many dimensions of your soon-to-be young adult.

4. Taking Advantage of What the Mechanicsburg Area Has to Offer

“Because we can” might not always be the best logic for doing something, but in this case, it absolutely is! The Mechanicsburg area simply has so many unique aesthetics to offer - there are stunning woodsy parks, edgy industrial locales, colorful floral fields, modern urban streets, quaint small-town looks, and so much more. To be frank, if we have all that available at our disposal, why not take advantage of it to make your teen’s senior photos truly wow-worthy?

Why are Cake Smashes Popular for Mechanicsburg PA First Birthday Photos?

As a baby photographer in central Pennsylvania, one of the most fun types of sessions for me is taking Mechanicsburg PA first birthday photos, especially when there’s a cake smash involved. While I welcome every family to have the photo session they want for their child’s first birthday, cake smashes have become an incredibly popular tradition, and there are a few reasons this might be.

A Baby’s Version of Birthday Cake

Birthday cake is such a core tradition for birthdays throughout the US, and cake smashes are fun because, frankly, smashing is exactly the way a baby would approach this tradition naturally. Your little one is exploring the world and they’d probably end up doing more playing than eating if you gave them a piece of birthday cake anyway, so it’s only natural that for their first birthday, they end up covered in their cake!

A Special Tradition for the Mechanicsburg PA First Birthday Photos

The whole purpose of photography is to forever preserve special moments and memories from your life. But every one of us has, at some point, looked at a photo and thought, “I can’t remember when this was or where this photo came from.” With cake smash photos, there’s never a question - when you see your baby’s cake smash portraits, you’ll always recognize the tradition and know that these are from your little one’s first birthday (even years later when they’re not so little anymore).

The Simple Answer: They’re Cute!

Truth be told, this is probably the main reason families love cake smash photos so much: they’re just so darn cute! The little girl in the photo shoot that’s featured in this blog was such a joy, and her portraits turned out to be undeniably adorable.

The Baby Photo Session You Don’t Want to Miss: Your Mechanicsburg PA Sitter Session

When you think of baby photos, you probably think of new newborn photos, right? Newborn portraits are precious, of course - seeing your adorable little one, all curled up and sleepy, embarking on their epic journey of life. But there’s another baby milestone photo session that isn’t talked about as much but that you’ll be so thrilled you did: a Mechanicsburg PA sitter session. That’s how I took the photos of the beautiful baby girl featured in this blog, so let’s talk about why parents love these photo shoots so much!

Your Baby is Alert but Not Too Mobile

One of the greatest joys of parenthood is seeing your child develop their one-of-a-kind personality and dreaming of who they’ll be when they grow up. A sitter session gives you portraits from when you’re first starting to discover who your baby is.

In your baby’s newborn days, they spend most of their time sleeping and eating as they continue their incredibly important work of developing. But by the time they hit the milestone of sitting up on their own (around 6 to 9 months on average, but this varies, of course), their curiosity about the world is really awakening and they’re starting to let that budding personality come out. What a perfect time to forever preserve these moments when you’re seeing sparkles of who your baby is becoming!

As an added bonus, your baby is not yet walking and crawling all over the room at this stage, so you and I don’t need to chase them and put them back on the set during the photo shoot. Take advantage of this simplicity while you can!

You Have Mid-Year Memories from Your Mechanicsburg PA Sitter Session

For a lot of families, the two big photo shoots they have for their baby are newborn photos and first birthday photos. As wonderful as those two sessions are, there’s so much that happens in between them! A sitter session is a perfect way to capture a little sliver of time during your baby’s first year to help complete the picture of this amazing year in your baby’s photo album.

Tips for Mechanicsburg PA Family Photography with Toddlers

Best outdoor family photographer near 17050

Family photos are irreplaceable and invaluable heirlooms that you and your family will treasure forever, especially as your kids grow up and look back on their childhoods. As much as I love seeing the joy that family portraits bring, I also understand that a lot of parents worry about how their toddler will be during a photo session and whether they’ll actually be able to capture what a sweet and joyful child their toddler is…or whether they’ll have a classic toddler tantrum and make it a stressful experience. In my Mechanicsburg PA family photography studio, I can assure you that there are ways to have a fantastic photo session with a toddler! Try these top tips.

Put Your Expertise to Use

You know your toddler - you know what puts them in a good mood and what tends to make them cranky. Now is the time to put that knowledge to good use! Plan the day of the photo shoot around making sure your little one is at their best when it’s time for the session: fed, rested, and ready to party!

Have Fun with Your Mechanicsburg PA Family Photography

You are your little one’s entire world, and they take so many cues from you - including cues on what activities are fun. If you want them to enjoy a photo session, talk about it the same way you’d tell them with excitement that they get to go to the zoo or see their friend or visit their grandparents. Make sure your spouse or partner does the same, because when your toddler sees that everyone else is happy and having fun, they will too!

Be Strategic with Your Incentives

It’s great to have some tricks up your sleeve to incentivize your toddler to be on their best behavior. Some of these incentives can become more harmful than helpful, though - specifically, bringing your child’s favorite toys to cheer them up. If you hand your toddler that teddy bear that goes everywhere with them, it might put a smile on their face, but when you try to take it away for more photos, they could have a meltdown. The rule of thumb is not to bring any items for your toddler that you don’t want to be in the photos.

Choose a Photographer Who Knows Toddlers for Your Mechanicsburg PA Family Photography

As a photographer who has worked with toddlers for many years, I can tell you that it’s a skill that takes time and experience to develop. I have plenty of practice turning tears into smiles and making toddlers feel comfortable during photo shoots, and it makes all the difference! Make sure you book your family session with a photographer who has this expertise.

If you want a beautiful and memorable family photo shoot with your sweet family, I’ll be honored to capture this moment in your family’s story. Contact Karissa Zimmer Photography and let’s start planning your session!
