How Many Locations Can You Have in a Hershey High School Senior Photo Shoot?

The portraits featured in this blog are from a wonderful girl’s Hershey High School senior photo shoot, and I was absolutely thrilled with how they turned out. As you scroll through them, you might notice that there are a lot of different background locales, so it looks like we were all over town for her photo shoot. That’s because we actually were! It’s not just a bunch of green screen magic or flat backgrounds.

This brings up a question that clients sometimes ask when they’re booking senior photos: how many locations can you have in a photo shoot? Every photographer has their own policies for this, so I’m happy to explain mine.

Location Limits for a Hershey High School Senior Photo Session

The short answer is that I don’t have a set limit on locations for senior photos. For the client whose portraits are featured in this blog, for example, we started in Harrisburg at the beautiful Susquehanna River. Then we made our way through the town of Hummelstown with photos at some locations throughout the town, and finished the session with portraits in a beautiful flower field.

This photo shoot with several different locations was perfect for this client, and the variety suited her well, but that’s not the right type of session for every client. As a photographer, my aim is to give every client a customized photo shoot that they love, and this looks different every time.

For that reason, I don’t set a limit to the number of locations we can use for your session. It’s always on an individualized basis within the timeframe we have available. We’ll discuss all of these details during your planning consultation so that you’ll know what to expect on the day of your session.

Senior Photo Outfit Ideas for Girls: Camp Hill PA Senior Portraits

When you have a daughter who’s getting ready for her Camp Hill PA senior portraits, you know that outfit planning is a big part of the process. As a photographer, I’m happy to work with you and your teenager to plan the perfect outfits, but I also know it can help to start thinking about ideas before your planning consultation.

Typically, for a senior photo shoot, you want to have three outfits or categories of outfits: casual, formal, and special interest outfits. Let’s talk about what each one of these is and what you might want to look for.

Casual Senior Photo Outfit Ideas for Camp Hill PA Senior Portraits

Your daughter’s casual outfits should be fun and flirty - something she’d love to wear for a day out with friends. It should feel authentically like her, and give a sense of who she is on a daily basis. Some popular ideas of this could include:

  • Shorts and a cute top with sneakers or sandals
  • A fun romper or jumpsuit
  • Styled basics, like a simple top and skirt or jeans, complemented with great accessories

Senior Photo Outfit Ideas for Formal Outfits

Your daughter’s senior portraits need to be versatile - she’ll share them with friends and use them on social media but she’ll also need them for more formal purposes like her yearbook, programs for extracurriculars, award and scholarship announcements, and more. So it’s important to have more formal outfits that are appropriate for those occasions. These might include:

  • A flowy sundress
  • A maxi skirt with a beautiful top

Keep in mind that most yearbooks have requirements for how revealing seniors’ photos can be, so make sure your daughter has a formal outfit that fits those requirements. Pay special attention to make sure she loves the neckline so that she’ll have headshots she loves too.

Special Interest Outfit Ideas for Senior Photography

We can’t forget about special interest outfits! These are more specific outfits that highlight certain hobbies and interests your daughter has. For example:

  • A jersey for a sport that she plays
  • Her ROTC uniform or an outfit that reflects her future career
  • Her letterman jacket

Why I Use Multiple Locations as a Cumberland Valley High School Senior Photographer in Mechanicsburg PA

If you’ve browsed some of my senior portraits in my portfolio, you might have noticed that each session has a lot of variety - varied locations and varied looks all packed into the same session. Every photographer does their photo shoots a bit differently, but as a senior photographer in Mechanicsburg, PA, I love to bring my clients to several outdoor locations in the course of their photo shoot.

Take this beautiful Cumberland Valley High School senior’s photo shoot for example. She had a great time seeing all the different looks we could capture at different locations in the Mechanicsburg area. Why exactly do I do this and why have I come to think this gives my clients the best senior portraits? I’m happy to explain!

1. Creating Visual Variety as a Senior Photographer in Mechanicsburg PA

You might be surprised by how often you use your teenager’s senior photos. They’re often used for their high school yearbook, programs for senior extracurricular activities like sports or musical performances, certain events or awards in their first year or two of college, and simply for you and other family members to frame and enjoy in your homes. When I incorporate several outdoor locations into the session, it offers a lot of visual variety, which gives you a lot of different looks to use for various formats and purposes.

2. Capitalizing on the Fluidity of a Senior Photo Shoot

Many types of portraits are meant to highlight a particular chapter of your life or aspect of your family, like a maternity photo shoot or a newborn photo shoot. As much fun as it is to highlight a special moment in your life, a senior photo shoot is unique because it’s a lot less defined - we’re celebrating your child as a whole, not just a particular life event. This means we have more freedom to get creative and be adventurous, so it’s a great opportunity to play with multiple locations. In fact, senior portraits are the only type of photo shoot when I get to shoot at several locations!

3. Honoring Your Teen’s Complexity

Senior photos are all about freezing this moment in time when your teenager is at the junction between childhood and adulthood, and you know well that they’re so much more than a one-tone personality. They have many different interests and aesthetics, so why limit their photo shoot to only a few aspects of who they are? Let’s celebrate every side of who they are! Taking advantage of multiple locations allows us to capture so many dimensions of your soon-to-be young adult.

4. Taking Advantage of What the Mechanicsburg Area Has to Offer

“Because we can” might not always be the best logic for doing something, but in this case, it absolutely is! The Mechanicsburg area simply has so many unique aesthetics to offer - there are stunning woodsy parks, edgy industrial locales, colorful floral fields, modern urban streets, quaint small-town looks, and so much more. To be frank, if we have all that available at our disposal, why not take advantage of it to make your teen’s senior photos truly wow-worthy?

What to Wear for Girls Senior Photos in Harrisburg, PA

For a lot of girls, planning outfits is one of the most fun parts of getting ready for their senior photos. Whether you’re going shopping for something new or pulling out the best of what your closet has to offer, I meet with each of my clients in advance to plan your wardrobe and all the other exciting details of your one-of-a-kind photo shoot. But if you want to start exploring some ideas, here are some tips for what to wear for girls senior photos in Harrisburg, PA.

A Central Dauphin high school senior sits in a beautiful field of tulips at her Harrisburg PA senior photo session with Karissa Zimmer Photography.

Have Casual and Formal Outfits

You’ll use your senior photos for a lot of different purposes, from social media to your senior yearbook, so you want to have enough looks to suit all those purposes. That starts with having a casual outfit or two and a more formal outfit too. Some popular favorites for casual outfits are:

  • A flowy boho dress
  • Jeans with a simple yet stylish top
  • A cute romper

On the flip side, your more formal outfit could include:

  • A sophisticated dress
  • Dress slacks with a classy top

Of course, it all needs to match the venues where your photos are taken, so don’t worry, we’ll talk through all of the styling in your consultation.

Dress for the Season in Your Girls Senior Photos in Harrisburg, PA

Senior photos are usually taken in the spring or summer before senior year or in the early fall, and the season you choose should match your outfit choices. For spring or summer, choose light and airy looks and colors, such as:

  • A sundress
  • Light warm-weather colors like white, blush pink, mint green, or vibrant yellow
  • Light fabrics

For fall, you can go with a more rustic or cozy look with deeper colors. For example:

  • Jeans and a sweater
  • Earth tones like shades of brown, army green, or rust orange
  • A sweater dress
  • A high school senior girl spins in a tulip flower field during her senior photo session with best high school senior photographer, Karissa Zimmer Photography.

Keep It Simple

These are your senior photos and we don’t want your clothes to take all the attention! Opt for solid colors, or patterns that are very simple and not too busy or attention-grabbing. When in doubt, it’s better to err on the side of simpler clothes because you can add accessories if you want more detail - it’s a lot harder to make a busy top look quieter than to dress up a simple top.

Remember: Choose Outfits That Fit Your Style and Personality

All of my advice above is generalized for a broad audience, and while it can be helpful, take it as suggestions rather than rules. Ultimately, your senior photo shoot is all about highlighting and memorializing who you are at this special crossroads in your life, so your outfits should be authentic to you.

When Should You Book a Harrisburg PA Senior Photographer?

It’s officially the season for senior photos! As not only a senior portrait photographer but also a mom of an incoming senior, I know how incredibly special these photo shoots are for teenagers as well as their families. After all, your child is about to become an adult, and this is one of the last milestones before they go into the world to start building their career, pursuing a degree, or whatever life has in store for them. But when should you start the process by booking your Harrisburg PA senior photographer?

Best High School senior photographer near Harrisburg PA

When to Book Your Harrisburg PA Senior Photographer

The ultimate rule of thumb is that booking earlier is better. Most senior portraits are taken either in the summer before senior year or in the early fall of senior year. For any type of photo shoot, you want to aim for booking two or three months in advance. So if you want a September photo shoot, you want to choose your photographer and book them in June or July. For senior portraits, though, booking even a bit earlier can be helpful.

Why Booking Early is Especially Important for Senior Portraits

Planning ahead is smart for any photo session, but the senior portraits featured in this blog show one of the reasons it’s especially helpful to book early for senior photos. I actually met this lovely young lady last August, and she mentioned that her dream photo shoot was in a field of tulips. Tulips look phenomenal in the spring, and because we started planning her session early, we were able to find an amazing tulip field and get her booked when the tulips would be at their best.

Planning for a specialized senior photo idea is just one example of how booking early allows you to have more options and flexibility. This is especially the case with senior photos, since most seniors book their photo shoots within the same few months of the year (as opposed to, say, family photo shoots which happen all year round). Photographers might have busy schedules during those months, so when you book early, it allows you to lock in a perfect date that works around your vacations, sports schedules, and so on.

It’s not too early to get your senior photo shoot on the books! Reach out and let’s start planning.

How to Prepare Before Your Camp Hill PA Senior Photo Shoot

There are so many exciting events and milestones in your senior year of high school. You’ll have your last prom and homecoming, you might have senior night for whatever sports or activities you’re involved in, and your school probably has some fun senior-exclusive events too. Your Camp Hill PA senior photo shoot is one of those milestones, and here are some prep tips to make sure you get spectacular senior portraits.

Invest Time in Skin Care

One of the best things you can do to make sure you look your best for the big day is to spend some time on your skin care. Yes, modern editing puts a lot of power in my hands to tidy things up in your photos, but still, no one wants to worry about pimples during their senior photo shoot. Plus, if you’re wearing makeup, a smoother complexion makes your makeup look better too. You don’t have to get too fancy and it’s not ideal to try out any new products too close to your photo shoot. But for a few weeks, be diligent about the basics like cleansing your skin twice a day, using any acne products you use, and applying non-acne-causing moisturizer.

Think About How You Want to Represent Yourself for Your Camp Hill PA Senior Photo Shoot

Senior photography is an amazing milestone that you’ll only get once, so even though you probably have plenty of other things keeping you busy, spend a little bit of time thinking on it. Think about how you want to represent yourself at this exciting juncture in your life. What interests and passions do you want to highlight? What’s most important to you at this time in your life? What do you want the general feel and look to be?

Get a Fresh Haircut…But Not Too Fresh

One of the most common mistakes for photo sessions is getting a haircut a day or two before the photo shoot. You want it to be fresh, sure, but haircuts often need some time to settle in before they really look natural. Plus, if it doesn’t look the way you wanted, you need time to get it fixed. I recommend getting your haircut a week or two before the session.

Plan Ahead for Props

In a senior photo session, props are a great way to create snapshots of what your life is like at this age. But you don’t want to be scrambling to get your props together at the last minute so plan ahead to decide what you want to bring and to make sure they’re ready. For example, make sure your athletic jersey will be clean and wrinkle-free, have your musical instrument polished, and so on.

How to Choose Locations for Your Mechanicsburg PA Senior Photos

Your senior portraits are an exciting milestone in your life and they’ll serve as a lifelong link to this moment in life before you embark on the adventure of adulthood. As a local photographer I can’t wait to help you create the Mechanicsburg senior photos of your dreams, and a big part of the planning is choosing the locations for your photo shoot. Here are my top tips for finding the perfect photo locations for your session.

The #1 Tip: Use Your Photographer’s Expertise

When you hire a professional photographer, you’re not just getting someone to wield a camera - you’re also getting all the photographer’s expertise too. I’ve been photographing seniors and other photo sessions throughout the area for years, so I know all the best spots! During your pre-session consultation we’ll talk about the types of looks you want for your portraits and I’ll be able to recommend locations based on your vision.

Consider the Mood or Tone of Your Mechanicsburg PA Senior Photos

One of the aspects of senior photography I love most is that they can have so many different ideas from one person to the next because they’re all about celebrating who you are at this time in your life. Where you take photos can immediately set the tone for your portraits, so we’ll choose your locations together based on the looks you want.

For example, if you want an edgy or industrial vibe there are plenty of locations with that look, or if you want something that has more of a girly and lighthearted tone we can choose a field of flowers or something with that type of atmosphere. These are just two examples but there are countless looks we can create and I can always find a location that matches the vibe.

Think About Meaningful Locations

For some seniors, there are certain locations that mean a lot to them or are a big part of their lives, and these can make fantastic backdrops for your senior portraits. For example, if you’re a baseball player, we could take photos at a local baseball field. You don’t have to incorporate meaningful locations but it’s an idea to consider.

Keep an Eye on Convenience

Of course you want to have the perfect locations for your photo shoot, but particularly when we’re going to several locations, convenience does need to play a part. It would take a lot of time out of your session if we have to drive 20 minutes or so between locations, so ideally, we want to choose locations that are within a few minutes’ drive.

Harrisburg Senior Photos: What to Wear

Senior photos are a rite of passage that so many emerging young adults look forward to, and you want your photos to be as beautiful as you are! One important factor to plan for is your wardrobe. What should you wear for your Harrisburg senior photos? I’ll chat with you about specifics during your pre-consultation, but in the meantime, check out these tips.

Bring Variety

All my senior photo sessions include multiple outfit changes, and you want your outfits to be different enough to capture all the looks you want. Consider bringing one casual outfit, one outfit that’s more formal, and one that reflects your personality or hobbies like your jersey for a sport you play, an outfit with a rocker aesthetic, or your culture’s traditional dress. It’s a good idea to have a few extra outfits too in case you change your mind or have a last-minute stain or broken zipper.

Don’t Forget the Details

When planning your outfits, the clothes are just the starting point. Plan which accessories, shoes, and jewelry you plan to wear with each outfit too and try it all on together. This way, you can make sure it looks the way you want and that you have everything you need.

Have Layering Options for Your Harrisburg Senior Photos

Layers are magic in a photo session! They give you more visual variety without a full outfit change and they add some depth and texture to your photos. Bring a denim jacket to go over your dress or a flannel shirt to layer onto a t-shirt and jeans.

Avoid Going Overboard with Patterns

A good rule of thumb for photo shoots is to choose solid colors rather than complex patterns. Avoid anything with words or with a prominent logo too. The exceptions may be outfits that signify a particular hobby or interest you have.

Preparing for Your Downtown Harrisburg High School Senior Portraits: Top Tips

So many of the photo sessions I perform are centered on a specific moment in my clients’ lives, and creating lasting mementos of this moment that they can cherish in the decades to come. That’s certainly the case with downtown Harrisburg high school senior portraits. Your child (or young adult) is about to launch a new life for themselves, and I’m here to make sure these portraits are the exciting milestone celebration they should be.

Want to make sure your teen’s senior portraits go as well as possible? Follow these tips as you’re planning and preparing.

Be Strategic with Outfits for Your Downtown Harrisburg High School Senior Portraits

Clearly, the outfits your teen chooses will make a great difference in the final look of their portraits, so it’s important to choose outfits wisely. It can be difficult to know what will and won’t photograph well. While planning your session, I’ll chat with you about my recommendations based on your teen and the look we’re aiming for, but here are a few other tips to keep in mind:

  • Choose solid colors or simple patterns over busy distracting patterns - we don’t want a shirt to steal the spotlight from your teen! The same goes for your jewelry: simpler is better.
  • Select outfits that are comfortable so your teen feels confident for their photo shoot.
  • Make sure the wardrobe feels authentic to your teen and their style.

When in doubt about an outfit, bring it! I can check out the outfits you’ve brought and give you my expertise on which ones will photograph best.

Leave Some Safety Time for New Looks

You don’t want to do anything *too* new on the photo shoot day. A fresh haircut is great, but make sure you schedule it for at least a week before your teen’s photo session. That gives it time to even out a bit if necessary and time for them to get used to styling it (or to fix it if they don’t like it). If your teen wants to try a new hairstyle or makeup look for their portraits, practice a few times at home first.

Work with Your Photographer on Props for Your Downtown Harrisburg High School Senior Portraits

During your teen’s high school senior portraits, props are a fantastic way to highlight who they are at this fun stage in their life. I’m always up for incorporating props like their sports jerseys, musical instruments they play, and props that align with their other hobbies and interests. We may even be able to take portraits with your teen’s beloved car or bike!

With props, though, you don’t want to bring any surprises to the photo shoot. Chat with me in advance about what props you want to bring so I can strategize the best ways to incorporate them.

Make Skincare a Priority

It’s so easy to fall out of your skincare routine, but your teen should make it a priority to maintain theirs in the weeks before their senior portraits. If your teen wants a facial, talk to your aesthetician in advance about when to schedule it based on their photo session, because some facials can cause irritation for a day or two.

With that said, don’t worry if your teen has some pimples during their photo shoot. Editing software is our friend!

The Ultimate Advice for Your Downtown Harrisburg High School Senior Portraits: Use Your Photographer’s Expertise

All the tips above are helpful but here’s the end-all-be-all: take advantage of your photographer’s expertise. I’ve been taking senior photos for many years and have first-hand experience with what works well and what doesn’t. When you hire me, you’re not just paying for my camera and my photography skills, you’re paying for my expertise. So, if you have a question, just ask!

Camp Hill High School Senior Portraits: Questions to Ask Your Photographer

Senior photography is a hallowed tradition that creates a lifelong memento of this incredibly unique milestone in your teen’s life. Every photographer works a bit differently, though, so it’s important to ask the right questions to know what to expect from the experience. As you prepare to book your Camp Hill high school senior portraits, make sure you’re asking these important questions.

How Will You Customize My Teen’s Camp Hill High School Senior Photo Session?

Senior portraits shouldn’t be cookie-cutter copies with the same poses and styles from person to person. These portraits are all about representing your young adult and who they are at this time in their life, so make sure your photographer will customize their session accordingly. For each of my clients, I customize their session based on their interests, activities, and personal aesthetic.

What Should I Bring to My Teen’s Photo Session?

Be sure to make a list of items your photographer recommends that you bring to your senior’s portrait session. That will include all the obvious items, like outfits and accessories as well as anything you might need to touch up their hair or makeup. Along with all this, though, I ask my seniors to bring any props that will help their portraits suit them. That can include anything that represents their interests – musical instruments, sports jerseys, and so on.

What Finished Products Will I Receive?

Before you book your senior portrait session, make sure you know what you’ll have in hand when all is said and done. Does your photographer work with you to design and order quality products like prints, framed portraits, albums, and so on? Or will you only receive digital files? As a full-service photographer, I guide my clients through every part of the process including ordering, sourcing, and delivering printed products so you know that you’ll have prints you can treasure and enjoy.
